Understanding Zinc and Copper Absorption in Our Supplements

Learn how zinc and copper interact for optimal absorption and safety in our supplements.

Updated over a year ago

At Together Health, we're committed to providing you with supplements that are not only kind to your body but also scientifically backed. One question we often get is about the interaction between zinc and copper, especially when taken together. Let's delve into this topic to clear up any concerns you may have.

Zinc and Copper: A Balancing Act

Zinc and copper are essential minerals that play vital roles in various bodily functions. However, when taken at the same time, they do compete for absorption in the gut. This phenomenon isn't unique to these two minerals; calcium and magnesium share a similar relationship as well as many other minerals. That's why we recommend taking our zinc supplement separately from meals, where you're likely to obtain dietary copper. Following this advice ensures that both minerals are effectively absorbed.

The Question of Depletion

The issue of whether zinc depletes copper reserves is a bit more complex. Scientific studies offer mixed results: some indicate that high levels of zinc supplementation can affect copper stores, while others do not. What is clear is that this effect has only been observed at very high levels of supplementation. Regulatory bodies have set the safe upper limit for zinc at a cautious 40 mg per day. Exceeding this limit could potentially affect copper levels in the body.

Our Safe and Effective Dose

We formulated the zinc dose in our product to be both safe and effective. At 10 mg per serving, it falls well below the 40 mg upper limit. Even when combined with our other products containing zinc, you won't approach this limit when taken as advised. Rest assured, our formulations are designed to work in harmony with your body without depleting essential minerals.

About Guava Leaf and Copper

Some of you have asked about the guava leaf in our product, which naturally contains copper. However, our extraction process utilises water, and copper is not water-soluble. As a result, there is no copper in our zinc supplement. Given the safe levels of zinc in our product, we believe that adding copper would only reduce its absorption and effectiveness.

In Summary

Our zinc supplement is carefully formulated to ensure optimal absorption without affecting your copper levels. By adhering to our suggested use, you can benefit from a product that is not only kind to your body but also backed by science.
